Has the summer got you
burning up? A free standing awning can keep you cool even in the hottest weather;
as much as 20 degrees cooler. They are a great way to shade large areas and do not need to be
attached to your home. The ability to place a freestanding awning wherever is needed makes it very
versatile.
You no longer have to use
a tent style setup when your family and friends come over. This allows for a great sit down area
where you can eat lunch and have drinks whenever you would like, without damaging any of the grass
under it like a normal tent type canopy does. The tent canopies are very much like a permanent
fixture, whereas a free standing awning does not have to be.
A
freestanding awning provides much more shade than a patio umbrella provides yet it’s just as functional. Most free
standing awnings also tilt from front to back, like a patio umbrella, so that you can spend even more time outside
without having to worry about where the sun is during the morning and evening hours. The awning can retracted in as
little 30 seconds, making it very easy for anyone to use.
This
type of product comes in up to 20 different colors to best suit your needs. The poles and stand are often made
of aluminum and are finished with a powder coated graphite finish.
The
hardware is made of stainless steel to avoid rusting if the awning is left outside. These freestanding awnings
are most often rectangular and come standard at 10’ x 15’.
Freestanding Awning Bases
There
are two types of bases that can be used. A ground insert base requires a cement base that needs to be put in the
ground. The base has stainless steel sleeves to prevent rusting and allows the support tubes of the awning to be
easily inserted and removed while leaving the ground completely flat. This is great for windy areas since the
base is very sturdy.
The
second base type for a free standing awning is a deck-mount plate. The deck-mount plate often comes with 16” x
¼” thick steel plates so the base can be mounted to any type of solid flat surface using 6 – 3/8” x 4” Stainless
steel bolts.
The
deck-mount plate base does cost extra but is very much worth it if this will be mounted to a deck or a cement
slab patio. The support awning tubes are easily removable.
Two specific types of free standing awnings are shown in the videos above.
When
considering purchasing free standing awnings, ask yourself what it will be used for and where you would
like to put it. A freestanding awning is a very practical solution for both decks and anywhere
in your yard, but depending on where it is placed you will need a different base style.
The best
part about this type of awning is it can easily
be moved, so you can put a deck-mount plate system on your deck and use a ground insert base in your backyard
and simply move the system as needed.
